When your personal brand pretty much hinges on the assumption you make a lot of money, posing with a bunch of your friends and an enormous check for a relatively small amount as if it’s a really big deal, is an PR move that probably could have been rethought.
Migos found that out earlier this week when they were slammed by thousands of people for doing just that. Posting a photo of the trio and their Quality Control labelmates OG Maco, Johnny Cinco, Rich the Kid and Skippa da Flippa alongside a check for $1000 made out to Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta, the trio copped a huge backlash on Instagram and Twitter for donating what works out to be about $333 each.
While, by the looks of things, the Migos’ gesture is nothing if not really, really earnest, it didn’t stop people from wondering why a group who apparently make $40,000 a show and were at that very moment was wearing several thousand dollars in chains and sneakers made such a big deal about donating the conservative figure.
Quality Control exec and manager Coach Q clarified the circumstances of the donation earlier today, explaining Migos were presenting a check from the label as part of a city-wide school tour, which is fair, but does nothing to make the thousands of shady comments directed at the group any less hilarious.
